Stough Creek Basin, Wind River Range

In August 2018 three friends and I spent a week in the Stough Creek Basin in the southeastern part of Wyoming's Wind River Range. We backpacked in from Worthen Meadow which is above Sinks Canyon to the west of Lander, WY. The area we were in is on the eastern side of the Continental Divide and lies in the Popo Agie Wilderness in the Shoshone National Forest. We found a nice campsite on a knoll above Big Stough Lake that we used as our basecamp for the 5 nights we were in the backcountry. Luckily, there were not fire restrictions in this area during our visit which allowed us to have nice evening cooking fires. The Stough Creek Basin is itself a glacial valley cut down into Roaring Fork ...

A Visit to Chihuly at Biltmore

Stough Creek Basin, Wind River Range

Ann and I visited Biltmore Estate for the opening evening of "Chihuly at Night". We had seen photos of Chihuly's works and remember a limited display at the Knoxville Museum of Art several years ago and we really wanted to see his work at Biltmore. The weather was not quite optimal on opening night with clouds building, rain coming, and a thunderstorm overhead later in the evening but we carried our umbrellas and tripods and had a good time exploring most of the outdoor displays. We plan to go back again later in the season and hope for better weather. The photos below give you the flavor of display. Captions contain names of the displays based on the Exhibition Map.

Stough Creek Basin, Wind River Range

I spent the week ending February and beginning March with three friends doing some backcountry ski exploring at two yurts located just east of the Continental Divide near Cumbres Pass. The area we visited is in the Rio Grande National Forest in southernmost Colorado. The Continental Divide Trail passes very close to the first of the two yurts we stayed in.Here are some of the highlights of the trip. Our trip started with a flight from Knoxville to Albuquerque from whence we drove to Santa Fe where we purchase the food we would need for 6 nights out in the mountains. The yurts have provided bunk beds, wood stove for heat and for melting snow for water, and a propane cooking stove setup with ...

Stough Creek Basin, Wind River Range

On Friday February 9 I took advantage of the beautiful late winter blue sky and warm temperatures and visited the Virgin Falls State Natural Area which lies between Crossville and Sparta, Tennessee. This is one of the most interesting pieces of public land on the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee. The Natural Area encompasses more than 1,100 acres of land which mostly lies on the northern valley slope of the Caney Fork River gorge and includes part of the Big Laurel Creek watershed. The area is geologically interesting with sandstone rimrock bluffs at the upper elevations and kartic limestone in the lower elevations of the valleys host very interesting cave features with ...

Wind River Mountains 2017

Stough Creek Basin, Wind River Range

In August I made a trip to the southern Wind River Mountains near Lander with two friends, Al and John. We were in the headwater valleys of a couple of tributaries to the Little Popo Agie River. Over the 6 nights we were in the backcountry we camped near two lakes at about 10,000 feet and made excursions up to about 11,000 feet to explore and fish in the higher streams and lakes. Our weather was extremely good with only a few passing afternoon clouds that dropped just a few raindrops that didn't wet the ground, or us. We witnessed the solar eclipse which was between 95 - 100 percent of totality where we were. Enjoy the pictures!
