Stough Creek Basin, Wind River Range

My friends Al and John, and I took another winter trip to live and play in the Rocky Mountain backcountry in early February this year. This time we reserved 3 nights each at two yurts in the Colorado State Forest State Park in northern Colorado. The two yurts we visited were the Grass Creek and Ruby Jewel Yurts. The red star on the map below shows the general area where we were to the west of Ft. Collins and east of Steamboat Springs. The terrain we were in was the western foothills of the southernmost Medicine Bow Mountains.Sunset light on the Medicine Bows from Grass Creek Yurt. The yurts provide "basic" essentials such as roof, wood stove for heat and a 2- or 3-burner propane cooking ...

Winter Storm on Mt. LeConte

Stough Creek Basin, Wind River Range

On the weekend of January 22, 2016 I was lucky enough to fill in as the LeConte Lodge winter caretaker while JP Krol headed to Alabama for a trail running event. I made my way up the mountain late on Friday as the snow was falling and drifting on the upper mountain. Luckily I had taken my snowshoes to make travelling possible since by Saturday there were snowdrifts several feet deep. The temperature was 0 on Saturday morning and throughout the day it hovered between +2 and +3 degrees with continuing snowfall and strong, gusty winds. I made several forays around the mountain top during the day Saturday, under the light of the full moon on Saturday night, and on Sunday after the clouds were ...

Sand Cave Hike

Stough Creek Basin, Wind River Range

Dick and I took his sister, Jan, on a day hike to Sand Cave while she was visiting us over Thanksgiving. Sand Cave, in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park (CGNHP), is not an actual cave; it is a large rock overhang made of sandstone. The "cave" is interesting with various colors of sand on the floor and impressive swirls and patterns on the ceiling. The room itself is HUGE -- over an acre in size and about 75 feet high in places. You really won't get the full effect of how big it is unless you climb up inside toward the back wall. The deep sand makes exploring inside the cave a workout!  We usually plan a full day for hiking to Sand Cave (and White Rocks). Sand Cave is ...

Stough Creek Basin, Wind River Range

In late August Ann and I headed west -- to northwestern Wyoming to see again the beautiful mountain scenery and explore a part of the Wind River Range that has been on our list since 2004.We planned a hike in the Bridger Wilderness starting at the Elkhart Park trailhead above Pinedale, with our car being shuttled to our end point at Green River Lakes by the friendly folks of the Great Outdoor Shop of Pinedale. The hiking distance was about 40 miles which we divided among 5 days. This was our first backpack in several years so we worked hard to get in top physical condition and shaved our pack weights down as much as practical but they were still quite large and very heavy. Our route is ...
